Types of Storm Damage We Deal With

Storm damage can take many forms. These are the categories we see most often across Sutton Coldfield and the West Midlands:

  • Trees uprooted / blown over — Complete uprooting often leaves tension in the root plate — we assess whether the tree can shift further before any cutting begins.
  • Trunk broken / torn open — Split trunks may need full removal rather than repair. We dismantle in sections where buildings or fences are close by.
  • Roots broken / damaged — Root failure can destabilise the whole tree. We advise honestly whether the tree can be saved or must come down.
  • Crown of the tree twisted — Twisted crowns may be structurally unsound. Crown reduction or removal may be required to make the tree safe.
  • Branches broken off or hanging — Hanging limbs are unpredictable — tension in the wood makes them more dangerous than they appear. We remove them from the top down.
  • Lightning damage — Lightning strikes can cause internal damage not visible from outside. We assess the full extent before recommending surgery or removal.

What to Do When a Tree Falls

  1. Do not approach the tree — it may shift, roots may still be under tension, and hanging branches may fall without warning.
  2. If anyone is injured or property is at risk, call emergency services (999) first.
  3. Call us on 0121 673 2670 — we'll assess the situation over the phone and advise on next steps.
  4. We can tell you honestly whether it's an emergency requiring same-day attendance, or something that can safely wait a day or two.

Surgery or Removal?

If a substantial portion of the tree remains and is in good condition, you may wish to consider tree surgery to remove damaged portions of the tree and prepare it to regrow. We are experienced in the careful handling of damaged but living wood and if it is possible to save a loved tree, then we will endeavour to do so.

Where the tree is beyond repair — or where safety requires full removal — we dismantle in sections from the top down. See our tree removal service for more on our felling and dismantling process, or our crown reduction page if partial reduction is the right option.

Storm Damage FAQs

Can you come out the same day for a storm damaged tree?

For genuinely dangerous situations — a tree on a structure, a large hanging branch, or a tree blocking access — yes, we'll prioritise accordingly. Call us on 0121 673 2670 to explain the situation and we'll tell you honestly how quickly we can get to you.

What if the tree has fallen on my house or car?

If there's any structural damage, contact your buildings or vehicle insurer first — most insurers will cover emergency tree removal if a tree has fallen on a property. We can work alongside your insurer and provide documentation if needed. Call us and we'll advise.

Do you deal with dangerous hanging branches?

Yes — a hanging or partially broken branch can be more dangerous than a fallen tree because the tension in the wood is unpredictable. We carry out aerial work to safely remove hanging limbs without them falling on structures below.
